Memory Care Support

Dementia is a progressive disease that gradually destroys memory and the ability to learn reason, make judgments, communicate, and carry out daily activities. Seventy different kinds of dementia have been identified. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for about 65% of all dementia-related illnesses. Caring for a person affected by this disease requires specialized training and support. During the beginning stages of dementia, a person’s home may be adapted to provide a safe environment. As the disease progresses, the support must compensate more and more for the effects and challenges dementia presents. Eventually, a family may need to consider residential care for their loved one.

The Memory Support Center will provide the following community resources:

A resource center will provide education, information and support to persons with memory loss, their caregivers and families. They will have access to publications and the internet at the center. Materials will be available for loan. The resource center will coordinate support groups, educational programs and seminars.

A home-based program will work with the caregiver to adapt the home into a safe environment for their loved one. It will teach care-giving techniques. It will provide transportation assistance, companionship, scheduled and emergency respite care. The home-based services will work with the caregiver to provide individualized services needed to create and extend successful in-home care for persons with dementia.

An adult day program will provide daily recreation, social support, and activities for persons with dementia. In a secure home-like setting, participants will engage in meaningful experiences that promote their self esteem and dignity. Their caregivers will have the comfort of knowing that while away from home their loved one is safe, active, and engaged.

The assisted living residence will provide a safe setting and comfortable apartments for loved ones who can no longer be cared for at home. It will provide 24-hour care and offer activities to enhance functional ability and improve quality of life. Residents will have private apartments with bathing facilities and share common living areas. Private space will be available for family visits and gatherings. All features will promote the independence, self-esteem, and dignity of the residents.
